Now, granted...I'm coming off of 12 years of using a Black and Decker model with a manual Cuisinart blade grinder, so there is some level of satisfaction just from being able to program a machine to make coffee for me before I get up. :)

I cannot confirm what a lot of the negative reviews said. And I completely believe that some folks get duds and have to return them. It *will* happen during the manufacturing process of anything with complexity and you are FAR more likely to hear from those people than those who are pleased.
